Gov. Schwarzenegger's press secretary said the legislators unhappy with the governor's veto of their bills earlier this week stand in contrast to many legislators who the governor worked with on bills that he signed.
"The governor has stood behind Republicans and Democrats on bills that were moving the issue forward," said press secretary Aaron McLear. "The governor is always looking forward to working with legislators."
As a further answer, McLear forwarded a response Schwarzenegger gave earlier this week to a question about whether his vetoes were in retribution for the record delay in getting a new state budget.
"In our business it's never about getting back at anyone. It's all about moving the state forward and trying to work together, Democrats and Republicans working together," Schwarzenegger said at the press conference on Monday. "And as you could see, some great work has been done by both parties."
If the bills the governor vetoed go before him again in future legislative sessions, McLear said, it's possible Schwarzenegger will sign them if they've been rewritten to fit what he can support.
That describes some bills the governor signed this week that he'd vetoed in previous sessions, McLear added.
