Mayoral candidate Kevin Johnson: Campaign PhotoSacramento Mayor Heather Fargo's re-election campaign is in a "tailspin," according to the Kevin Johnson campaign.
In a memo sent to reporters Friday, Johnson campaign manager Steve Maviglio pointed out that Susie Shields, a Fargo supporter, said in an Associated Press article Thursday that she believed Johnson will win the race.
He also noted that Fargo didn't receive the endorsement this week of the city's oldest Democratic group, the Harry S. Truman club. Both Johnson and Fargo are Democrats, though the position is officially non-partisan.
Maviglio noted that Fargo's fundraising lagged behind Johnson's during the most recent reporting period, which ended Sept. 30. Fargo raised $177,283 in that period, and had a cash-on-hand balance of $116,257.30.
Johnson raised $239,849.16 between Aug. 9 and Sept. 30, and had a balance of $139,040.82.
"As we head down the stretch, it appears the mayor's campaign continues to be in a downward spiral," Maviglio said in the memo. "Perhaps that's the reason for the increasingly negative tone of her meritless attacks on the media and Kevin Johnson."

Mayoral Politics - Who has the vision thing?
The campaign for Mayor of Sacramento has now been debated for almost a year. But neither the Incumbent Heather Fargo or the Challenger Kevin Johnson has articulated a vision for City that all of us in Sacramento can embrace.
When a campaign lacks a strategy to frame a vision voters can easily envision they move to political day to day tactics - mailers, commercials, money, endorsements, press memos etc...
The sign of a great city is when its leaders debate their perspective visions to create a better and greater City; such as Villarogosa in LA, Newsom in SF, Daley in Chicago, Bloomberg in NY, Diaz in Miami, Nichols in Seattle, and Fenty in DC.
Our contest is developing into a sad story of duels of who will give more money to whom to gain their special interest support.
With less than 25 days remainding lets hope that our shy press and laid-back community leaders turn up the volume and demand a comprehensive narrative of the candidates to articulate a vision for Sacramento worth debating.
