If John McCain does win the presidency, look for California’s Bill Jones to wind up in a prominent role in the new administration, maybe as a member of McCain’s cabinet. Jones is one of McCain’s most loyal supporters here, serving as his state campaign chairman in 2000 and 2008.
Jones, 58, served six terms as an Assemblyman before winning election as Secretary of State in 1994 and 1998. He beat incumbent Tony Miller by just a half a percentage point in ’94 and Michela Alioto-Pier by just one percentage point in ’98. He’s lost three races: a bid for State Assembly in 1976, a Republican primary for Governor in 2002, and a 2004 race for U.S. Senate against Barbara Boxer, where he won just 38% of the vote.
And if McCain does win, make no mistake about this one: the most powerful Californian in Washington would be political consultant Steve Schmidt. A top McCain advisor, Schmidt managed Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 2006 re-election campaign, and was Communications Director for Matt Fong’s bid for U.S. Senate (against Boxer) in 1998.U.S. Rep.
