Loyola Marymount University was the scene of the first debate and straw poll among the SD-25 field, hosted by the Westchester Democratic Club, and the news was good for former Assemblyman Rod Wright.
Wright, AD-52 Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally and Kevin Biggers presented their campaign platforms to members of the Lawndale, San Pedro, Westchester and West LA Democratic Clubs, finding consensus on at least one major issue: All signed the LAX Modernization not Expansion pledge. However, it was Rod Wright's energy-centric policies that won over a plurality of the crowd.
Out of the 66 polled, 31 went for Wright, with Dymally garnering 20 and community organizer/former Gov. Gray Davis staffer Kevin Biggers bringing up the rear at 15.
However, Dymally scored big among West LA and San Pedro Dems, earning the backing of 14 of the 20 who voted.
Here are the complete results:
Total
Wright 31
Dymally 20

Yet Dymally has several advantages overall, including a current incumbency, decades on the California political scene (including stints as Lieutenant Governor and Congressman) and, as the Sacramento Bee reports, a nearly three-to-one fundraising advantage over Wright.
