Poll: young voters support Prop 8

A new poll from Survey USA has some surprising results which contradict most other polling data. Overall, voters are somewhat split on the issue, with 47 percent supporting Proposition 8, which would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry, while 42 percent are opposed.

But the subsample of voters between 18 and 34 support the measure by a considerably larger margin of 53 to 39 percent.

That would seem to contradict most previous polling which suggests a generational divide on the issue, with young voters more likely to support same-sex marriage and older voters more likely to be opposed.

A bail-out is better than a rescue?

Everyone in DC is now calling their plan to fix the financial crisis a "rescue", not a "bail-out," but maybe they should have done the focus group first. Here's a surprising result from a poll of Bay Area adults who were asked the same question various different ways.

Q: The government may invest billions to try and keep financial institutions and markets secure. Do you think this is the right thing for the government to do? The wrong thing for the government to do? Or, do you not know enough to say?
A: Right Thing 39% Wrong Thing 37% Do Not Know Enough 24%

Q: The government may spend billions to bail-out Wall Street. Do you think this is the right thing for the government to do? The wrong thing for the government to do? Or, do you not know enough to say?
A: Right Thing 40% Wrong Thing 42% Do Not Know Enough 18%

Q: The government may spend billions to rescue Wall Street. Do you think this is the right thing for the government to do? The wrong thing for the government to do? Or, do you not know enough to say?
A: Right Thing 34% Wrong Thing 46% Do Not Know Enough 20%

Recall elections: not just for governors any more

The American River College student council yesterday voted for a resolution supporting Proposition 8 which would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry. Which means....

Students who support gay marriage said they've already collected 450 signatures – enough to force a recall election of the eight council members who voted for the resolution.

If the signatures are validated, a special election would have to be held within 10 days, said Councilman Tim Richey, who led the opposition. "We are against discrimination and hatred, and we want them out of office."

Californians want an economic rescue plan, but not this one

A Survey USA poll released this morning found that a plurality of voters (40 percent) want their representative in Congress to vote for an economic rescue, while 28 percent are opposed

But when asked about "the specific rescue plan that the government has worked out," 41 percent are opposed while only 14 percent support the measure. That level of opposition is consistent across party lines, though a bit stronger among independents.

A scary number: 23 percent are very concerned that the bank where they keep their money will fail.
