The U.S. House of Representatives rejected a $700 billion bailout package for the financial markets today by a 228-205 margin, with a similarly close split among California representatives.
While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) lead 19 of her fellow California Democrats in voting for the bill, 15 Democrats defected. On the whole, nearly 60 percent of House Democrats followed Pelosi's lead.
The Republican vote in the Golden State was even closer, with 10 representatives supporting the legislation and 9 voting against it.
A switch of just 12 votes would have changed the outcome.
