Dreier takes flack from opponent for bailout bill vote

U.S. Rep. David Dreier (R-San Dimas) voted for the failed $700 billion financial bailout package Monday, prompting attacks from Democratic challenger Russ Warner.

Warner's campaign pointed to a conflicting statement on Dreier's website, where the 13-term incumbent writes, "I believe we need to empower families to make sound economic choices and avoid taxpayer funded bailouts."

While Warner says he would have voted for the bailout bill as well, his campaign attacked Dreier for changing his position.

"The vote illustrates that Dreier says one thing and does another," said Kristin Points, Warner's campaign manager.

Warner also hit Dreier for giving "George Bush what he's asking for," even though the legislation had the backing of both the House Democratic leadership and the party's presidential nominee, Barack Obama.
