Endorsement day for San Diego City Council District 3 candidates

Todd Gloria and Stephen Whitburn, the two Democratic candidates for San Diego City Council District 3, both announced noteworthy endorsements Wednesday.

Gloria earned the support of former state Senate President Pro Tempore Jim Mills, author of a law bearing his name that protects historic homes.

In a statement announcing his support, Mills praised Gloria's commitment to "preserving the character of our great neighborhoods," adding that "he is the right man for the job."

Whitburn, meanwhile, announced an endorsement from longtime Latina civil rights activists Gracia Molina de Pick and Delores Huerta, who co-founded the United Farm Workers with Cesar Chavez.

"Stephen Whitburn will fight for our community and work for stronger neighborhoods for our families," Huerta said in a statement.

Recent financial disclosures show Gloria outpacing Whitburn in fundraising by a substantial margin, leaving him with almost $30,000 more cash on hand.

Fred Williams is all over the place

What is up with that Fred Williams guy? He post one comment for Todd one against Todd and then a stream of comments claiming he's not himself. Dude, see a psychiatrist and spend some time away from your computer.
What a joke!

Will the real Fred Williams please stand up?

This other guy is a fake and stole my name on the Reader website.  But, frankly, I don't care.

Here's the facts:

Issue #1: Why hasn't Stephen Whitburn come clean about the nearly $200,000 that he's used of his own money to grease his campaign?

Remember, Whitburn works as a PR rep for a non-profit. Salary: ~$55,000.

Whitburn owns NO assests, besides an old car.

Whitburn has refused to donate to charities in the past, claiming he "doesn't have enough money."

Yet, Whitburn has nearly $200K to dump into his campaign?

Here's an irrifutable fact: Whitburn just moved to town a few years ago and he's trying to buy the election. Reject shady politicians, reject Whitburn.

Election Day is a chance to move forward, that's why I support 3rd generation, native, Democrat Todd Gloria for City Council.

Bogus Post Warning

The author of that anti-Whitburn post is obviously NOT me.

Identical posts by a user masquerading as "Stephen Davis from South Park" or "District 3 Resident" can be found online at the Reader, GLT, or VOSD.

This is a deliberate attempt to mislead. Typical of Todd Gloria supporters.

You can read my own words at:

Admin, remove fake posting, please

I did NOT write the first posting here. Someone has registered using my name. I am a strong supporter of Stephen Whitburn, and the poster above has copy/pasted the same rant he usually posts under the false alias "Stephen Davis from South Park".

He's using my name in a deliberate attempt at deception. I do NOT support Todd Gloria.

Please, Admin, REMOVE the offending poster. Feel free to contact me via email. You can also have a look here to verify my identity:

Why Won't Stephen Whitburn Come Clean?

Whitburn is just another tainted political hack.

Here are FIVE things he is trying to cover up:

(1). He greased his campaign with over $140,000. Surprisingly, Whitburn has no assets besides a 1991 Honda Civic. Where does a person who can’t afford a car with power windows come up with $140,000 for a political race?

Why won’t Whitburn come clean about the source of his money? Was it illegally obtained? If not, is this the type of shabby fiscal management we need at City Hall?

(2). Stephen Whitburn accepted an out-of-state contribution from a Texas attorney at the law firm of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP. This firm was lead counsel for George W. Bush in Bush vs. Gore, which gave Bush the election and sent our country on a spiraling downward path.

Why can’t Stephen Whitburn make better decisions?

(3). Whitburn claims to be a San Diegan, but he is from back East, doesn’t own a home in our City and has moved at least three times in the last 8 years. If elected, most District 3 residents will have been in their area longer than their councilmember. Whitburn is not an involved community member, but instead a calculating opportunist.

Is Whitburn fit to hold office when he has such a limited history and understanding of the District and its needs?

(4). Whitburn’s campaign propaganda claims he will stand up to developers and lobbyists. In fact, Whitburn has accepted thousands of special interest dollars from:

Developers, Real Estate Executives and Mortgage lenders, including campaign cash from firms that have foreclosed on hundreds of San Diego’s working families.

High-priced Downtown Lawyers, including contributions from a law firm whose lead lawyer is in Lompoc Federal Prison for multiple felonies, including, fraud and racketeering.

Oil and Gas Executives responsible for outrageous gas prices that are gouging middle class working families.

If Whitburn is so close to the special interests, aren’t the residents of District 3 sure to lose with Steven Whitburn? How can the voters put their trust in a candidate that says one thing and does another?

(5). Whitburn proudly touts the endorsements he received from a convicted criminal. John Hartley, a former candidate for District 3, plead guilty to a lewd conduct in public charge during the election and is listed as a proud supporter of Whitburn. After his plea, Hartley was banned from his day job-- substitute teaching in the San Diego Unified School District.
Is this someone you would be proud to have support you?

With this impaired judgment, is there any question why law enforcement has refused to endorse Whitburn’s candidacy for City Council?

If you do own a historic

If you do own a historic home, you really want to reconsider that vote for Todd. The Senator Jim Mills has backtracked on his own Act saying its overused. He would agree w/ the Building Industry on this one and would keep the changes the mayor made to virtually exclude everyone. Remember Mills was also a politician---always think twice.

The endorsement of Jim Mills

The endorsement of Jim Mills doesnt mean much. John Mills himself has come out and said that there are too many homes being preserved under the Mills Act. He's ironically not really respected by preservationists anymore. No real preservationists are supporting Todd. They are all supporting Stephen. I asked around a long time ago---for preservation, look to Bruce Coons of SOHO and Donna Frey.

Interesting

Todd has ben getting slammed as of late for being a developer's dream, but that's hard to uphold while he announces the endorsement of Jim Mills. I am a proud owner of a designated historic home and am so grateful for the work that Jim Mills has done to preserve our community. If Todd Gloria is backed by Mills, I trust that he will fight for my home and my neighborhood. Thank you Jim Mills for letting us who will be a champion of Historic Preservation.
