Independent expenditure committees spent more than $2.3 million on the general election campaign for the open seat in the 19th state Senate District.
More than two-thirds of the money, about $1.7 million, went towards helping Republican candidate Tony Strickland. The biggest spender was Californians for Jobs and Education, which spent a grand total of $942,939 boosting Strickland's candidacy.
Democratic candidate Hannah-Beth Jackson saw $645,283 spent on her behalf, more than 80 percent of which came from the California Alliance, a coalition of consumer attorneys, conservationists and nurses.
