Democrat Hannah-Beth Jackson has pulled into an early but substantial lead over Republican Tony Strickland in the 19th state Senate District. With about 156,000 votes counted, Jackson is leading Strickland 52 percent to 48 percent.
"So far I'm very optimistic," Jackson said. "We aren't quite at the point where we have enough numbers that we can declare victory, but it's certainly looking very favorable for us."
"[Our campaign] is part of that whole change of attitude and moving away from the politics of fear to the politics of hope," Jackson continued. "I'm optimistic that the people of the 19th Senate District feel the same way."
Jackson expected it to be a long night, but her early 4 point lead has her hoping for a result by early morning.
"I thought we were going to be drinking a lot of espresso tonight," Jackson said. "I'm hoping we can have a little less espresso and a little more celebratory [beverages]. I'm still cautious because we need to see more information but I'm very excited."
Strickland consultant Joe Justin argued that Jackson's early lead was due to vote totals from Santa Barbara County, where she lives.
"All of Santa Barbara is in, and there's only good stuff to come in from Ventura and Los Angeles counties," Justin said.
