Obama stakes out position on California gay marriage ballot initiative

Barack Obama: Getty Images PhotoReversing a previous position where he said the issue of gay marriage should be left up to the individual states, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama said over the weekend that he would oppose the California ballot proposition seeking a ban against same-sex nuptials.

In a letter read before the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club's Pride Breakfast in San Francisco on Sunday, Obama said he would oppose Prop. 8, the so-called Defense of Marriage Act that would amend the California Constitution to define marriage as being only between a man and a woman.

"I am proud to join with and support the LGBT community in an effort to set our nation on a course that recognizes LGBT Americans with full equality under the law. That is why I support extending fully equal rights and benefits to same sex couples under both state and federal law. That is why I support repealing the Defense of Marriage Act and the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy, and the passage of laws to protect LGBT Americans from hate crimes and employment discrimination...." Obama wrote.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, the GOP presumptive presidential nominee, has endorsed the proposition's passage.

Protect Marriage

California voters have the opportunity to take a great step forward in the preservation of both marriage between a man and a woman, and the family unit as the fundamental unit of society.
Those who value marriage and family: PLEASE get out there and vote for Proposition 8! Not only will it preserve the family unit in California, but it will help strengthen efforts in other states.
Let's show Senator Obama what Americans truly value!

True Colors Shown

Now it is clear where this senator stands regarding freedom to recognize only Traditional marriage as real marriage. Shame on him.
