Renewable energy measure promising to turn into pricey political slugfest

In what could prove to be one of the most expensive political slugfests of the Nov. 4 general election, a San Francisco-based utility has recently donated a cool $12 million to an effort to see that Prop. 7 is defeated.

Add in an extra $10 million from Pacific Gas & Electric's counterpart to the south, Rosemead-based Southern California Edison, plus $1.7 million in assorted prior donations and you get a total of $23.7 million being spent so far by Golden State utility companies to kill a ballot measure which Field Poll researchers said recently was being favorably viewed by California voters.

Specifically, Prop. 7 would require all California utilities to generate at least half of their power from alternative sources, such a wind or solar, by 2025. The power companies are already required to provide 20 percent of energy from renewable sources by 2010.

Southern California Edison representatives recently told the Sacramento Bee that, if approved, the measure "would upend the existing regulatory process, disrupt existing renewables development, significantly raise rates and threaten reliability."

Supporting the measure is Peter Sperling, son of Arizona billionaire and University of Phoenix founder John Sperling. Sperling, to date, has donated $3 million to promote Prop. 7's passage.

Jim Gonzalez, a former San Francisco supervisor and current Sacramento-based political strategist, has funneled $100,000 to help the measure pass as well. Gonzalez is the initiative's primary spokesman.

Response to crazy!!!

You have got to be kidding.... I have never read so much drivel in my life. If you are wondering why you receive so much resistance in your chosen industry, then maybe you shouldn't be so quick to start pointing fingers at past and potential employers. With all your so called education, it amazes me that you could be so ignorant to think that attacking the owner of a superyacht will do anything to help launch your career or (what is more likely your intention) provide compensation to you for something that he has no knowledge of. I was actually part of the crew and remember you well, which is unusual, seeing as we used to employ hundreds of temporary workers like yourself. The reason I remember you, is because from the first moment you came on board, you started complaining about conditions. This is unusual for someone who is looking for potential employment. YOU ARE THE REASON that many Americans have a hard time getting employment in the industry, so you only have yourself to blame. People like you who cry "Oh poor Me" and put your hand out. If there was any reason you were not offered permanent employment it is because you were substandard and all you had to offer was a potential lawsuit....So on behalf of Americans in the industry I say THANKS! Oh and one other thing, I have never heard of anyone so unprofessional that would use a totally unrelated sight to slander a man who is involved in so many charitable and great causes. I can't believe you have dragged me down to your level in order to defend myself and the crews reputation.

American, really?

This is one of the worst written letters I've ever seen, and if this rambling, uninteligible nonsense came across my desk, I'd ignore it too.

Letter to Peter Sperling

[some information deleted] I have written and sent you a letter a few months back. I understand I may not have received a response from yourself for any particular reason. You may have not received the first letter that I sent you, so this may all be new to yourself at this time. I did try and convey a matter to you in discreet earlier on through your company, Call Wave via email. I am assuming an assistant of yours received my requests before passing them to yourself. I am sending you this message in a final attempt to resolve a concern that I’ve had for a couple of years now.

In the initial letter, I tried to convey to you that I had experienced, at least from what I had learned, some fair amount of slander and harassment by a supervising crew member, Grant Kitely. I believe he is a lead deckhand or perhaps bosun on m/y Reverie. To this day I think about my experience in trying to deal with such matters from this yacht. I need to say by now that I have become pretty weary about this in which I’ve allowed myself to act in an unseemly manner towards this individual and once to a few others from this yacht. I understand fully that I have a lot of faults by now when it comes to reacting to adversity. I don’t at all believe that an apology by myself will makes things much better. My leaving all of this behind might be better for any crew member of m/y Reverie or yourself, but I don’t believe it would be fair to myself regardless of my reactions thus far. I don’t believe my actions towards any individual is “punishment” enough or cancels anything they have done against me beforehand.

For what it’s worth, Mr. Sperling, being from the US and working in an industry like this that is already bent against the hiring and ethical treatment of Americans hasn‘t been too easy for myself, and I believe for many other hard working and decent American crew members as well. And for what it’s worth, I still consider myself a decent individual who would never treat any crewmember in the way I was treated on your yacht no matter what my position would be. I thought that based upon my positive experiences as a stewardess, my college and maritime education, and my gained references in yachting would give me an opportunity to thrive in this industry without so much adversity. But by now, I believe I’ve faced too much of it so far..unwarranted many times over. I did not need what happened to me on m/y Reverie to be an obstacle for me in this industry. As someone from the US who has tried with much effort and cooperation to eek out a living in this industry, it has been challenging enough just do so.

My experiences have taught me that there are issues among those who face problems in this industry based upon their nationality, gender, and age regardless of positive references and experiences with other crew members. I certainly don’t expect someone such as yourself to empathize with me especially since you may already have seen me in a bad light more times over. But please bare in mind that no matter what I’ve done along with my feelings towards anyone in any way, I did not deserve to be treated in the manner that Grant Kitely and few others had treated me as a day worker on m/y Reverie. It is still my hope that you can come to terms with what I’m conveying to you in this letter and help me resolve this. By now, since I firmly believe that Grant Kitley and a few others have at least once acted in an unprofessional manner over myself for absolutely no reason during my day working on m/y Reverie, that he and others should be disciplined immediately. I’ve already explained this in my first letter to yourself as painful it was for me to do so. And I would hope that if you considered being a part of resolving these concerns that you would kindly convey that to me. You are the owner from what I understand, and I believe ultimately you incur some responsibility in resolving this situation. I hope you can think about what I’m conveying in this letter to you and kindly respond in an attempt to resolve these concerns that I have at this time. Thank you,

Peter Sperling should donate to me..absolutely. Yep. I said that

While I understand the implications of posting a message like this online, and while I will be considered flat out mad for doing so, I'm going to post my impression of Peter Sperling. I'm a yacht stewardess who once day worked on m/y Reverie.

If Peter Sperling is donating a bunch of money to causes like this as being a concerned and impassioned democrat of which he should be commended for doing so [depending on one's view of course], I think he should also donate his time and reaction over a matter of slander and discrimination that occured [against myself by certain crew members and dayworkers] on a yacht that he owns.

I'm not 100 percent certain, but I believe Peter Sperling owns m/y Reverie, or is one of the partners of this yacht. I have steadfast tried to contact Peter Sperling, even mailing a letter to him at his CallWave and University of Pheonix businesses. I already have the impression that Peter Sperling has received word from me and about me, but his reaction to me at this time is basically null. I will also post again the second and last letter that I hope to send him soon. Call me slanderous and mad for doing so, but I think it's a matter of keeping the truth alive instead of trying to bury what actually happened to myself while dayworking on m/y Reverie.

I'm just about fed up with the yachting industry as it is. I did not need the Reverie to be part of a bad experience for myself as I've encountered some pretty shady experiences before and after as a yacht stewardess. While I don't claim to be innocent when it came to dealing with adversity and certain personalities in this industry, it is not enough for me to say that I have been disrespected, slandered, tainted, discounted, and treated like a second class individual times over while losing a big chunk of my livihood and while trying to survive and being stuck in an industry bent againt people like myself...not just because of my big mouth, by now anyway, but since the beginning of my career and based upon my nationality and age for starters. And it's not like it's easy for me to switch industries in a snap...especially at my age. I did not go to college and work hard for stuff like this to be thrown at me as if I don't matter at all. I know I'm one of the good guys [gals]...no matter what Peter Sperling or anyone from m/y Reverie... or some shady crew agent would want to say about me. At least I was at first. All in all, I did not do what Grant KITELY did to me...I've supervised before and would never treat someone as such. I think most women would not do so as well. No one ever deserves to be disrespected by crew members or by yacht owners in this manner. And by the way, I expect to be compensated by now. And that means by you, Mr. Sperling. Here's a tip, take part of Grant Kitely's, Simon Bridgwood's, Chris Guy's pay, and who ever else is involved...maybe some of those low class and shady dayworkers...some who were once friends of mine, and from your pocket as well, since I believe you've deliberately ignored my grievance to you.

I believe Peter Sperling has known about this situation...according to his view of course. Crazy post? Well, I think these people and their practices [and lack there of] are pretty outlandish and crazy myself.

It's easy to assume that someone like myself would do stuff like this as if I'm acting in a irrational and audcacious manner...but in reality, this is something that is long over due. Enough is enough. If I am right about Mr. Sperling, he is nothing but a hypocrite to me...I don't care how many people like this guy. We all know to well that people treat others as if they are decent or special...while treating others as if they don't matter as much..just at first glance.
