Yes on 8 uses Newsom's own words against him in their first TV ad of campaign

Proponents of Prop. 8, the November ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in California, rolled out their first TV ad of the campaign Monday and used gay marriage proponent Gavin Newsom's own words against him.

The ad, which can be seen on the Yes on 8 Web site here, uses the exuberant words of the San Francisco mayor at a May 15 press conference following the California Supreme Court's decision to legalize gay marriage in the state.

The ad uses and then repeats parts of Newsom's exclamations.

"This door's wide open now ... it's gonna happen now whether you like it or not," Newsom is seen telling a large and supportive City Hall crowd.

At the end of the 30-second spot, Newsom's exhortation ..."whether you like it or not" is repeated in a taunting fashion, perhaps to scare voters considering how to vote on the measure that would legally define marriage in the California Constitution as being only between a man and a woman.

In between the clips of Newsom speaking, the ad also uses Pepperdine University Law School Professor Richard Peterson who warns voters that voting against the measure would mean that acceptance of gay marriage would be "mandatory" and that it would be "taught" in public schools. Peterson also warns that churches could lose their federal and state tax exemptions.

Attempts to reach Newsom for comment on the ad Monday morning were unsuccessful.

YES on 8

Standing up to protect marriage and our families and children is NOT "mean spirited". Our opinions may be different but we do not seek to disenfranchise or discriminate against anyone. If Prop 8 fails it will bring a cascade of lawsuits. My son just started Kindergarten and I want to be able to determine when how he is exposed to same sex marriage - not to have it mandatory instruction.

Check out this video if you want to see how allowing Same sex marriage has affected a family in Massachusetts.

The rights of the minority...

"We already spoke out, voted, and confirmed our beliefs: "Yes to traditional marriage." Now remind me... Why are we doing this again!?"

Because what you voted for in 2000 was unconstitutionally discriminatory.

When the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1968 (Loving v. Virginia) that anti-miscegenation laws were unconstitutionally discriminatory, it overturned a very popular state statute, supported by the vast majority of Virginia voters. But we live in a constitutional democracy, Belle, in which popular sentiment may not rescind the rights of unpopular minorities, be they mixed-race couples seeking marriage, or same-sex couples seeking marriage.

Nice try, Belle.

C'mon, the ad was as mean-spirited, unfocused and dishonest as the Yes on 8 campaign itself.

It was awful. It offers the viewer a choice between an enthusiastic crowd and a dour Pepperdine law professor going for the hard sell like a used car salesman facing the end of a bad month. I hope and pray that Frank and Jeff decide to spend their entire war chest buying airtime for this ad.

AWESOME! Yes on 8!

This ad is great - it tells it like it is!

Thank you for finally speaking out against the activist judges who bowed to the vocal minority, overstepped their jurisdiction and foisted this ghastly situation on the voters of our great state - who in 2000 were unfortunately naive enough to think that their votes counted for something... We already spoke out, voted, and confirmed our beliefs: "Yes to traditional marriage." Now remind me... Why are we doing this again!? Oh, well, here we are (and if this passes, I'm sure will be again because these activist groups are like spoiled children who won't give up their tantrums until they get their way) We should all be outraged and incensed that our votes were ignored/invalidated. Where is the accountability? Vote your conscience, say no to activist judges - VOTE YES ON 8!!!
