House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, not wanting a repeat of Monday's failed vote on the $700 billion Wall Street bailout package, implored her colleagues to vote for the measure a second time early Friday afternoon.
Her final entreaties paid off as the rescue bill was passed.263 to 171.
The San Francisco Democrat promised that inquiries into how the nation got into the mess in the first place would be carried out.
"This was not a great bill," Pelosi said after the bill was passed. "We were dealt a bad hand and we made the most of it."
Pelosi said that going forward, she and other Congressional leaders would push for new Wall Street regulatory reform.
"Our eye now is on the future. We will shine the bright light of accountability and scrutiny on (Wall Street)," the speaker said. "Our focus will be on accountability and building an economy that focuses on the middle class."
