Primary Day: Polls are open

It’s primary day in California.

Voters in the state are choosing general election candidates in several hotly contested congressional races. Also on the ballot are the dueling eminent domain measures 98 and 99. Voters in San Francisco and Marin will make their selection in a state Senate race. And Sacramento and San Diego have mayoral contests.

Polls opened across the state at 7:00 AM. They will close at 8:00 PM.

Marin vs. San Francisco: The race for 3rd District Senate seat

Joe Nation has established his political footing in Marin, which has elected him to the state Assembly for three consecutive terms. But the Democrat’s current campaign for the California state Senate’s 3rd District will largely be dependent on his ability to capture voters on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge, in San Francisco.

That is because the June 3 Democratic primary is shaping up as a battle between San Francisco’s Mark Leno, a former member of the city’s Board of Supervisors who is being termed out of the state Assembly after three terms, and Marin’s Nation. Whichever candidate is best able to reach beyond their support base is likely to capture the seat.
