SF supervisor wants Tommy Lasorda dropped like a hot calzone from city's Italian Heritage Parade

SAN FRANCISCO - In what could be viewed as a stroke of local political genius or inanity, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is calling on representatives of the city's Italian community to give their choice of Italian Heritage Parade grand marshal the boot out of town.

That man, famed former Los Angeles Dodgers Manager Tommy Lasorda, is scheduled to preside over the Oct. 12 parade and celebration.

But Supervisor Michela Alioto-Pier - granddaughter of powerful former San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto, niece to former Board of Supervisors President Angela Alioto, proud Italian-American and a devoted San Francisco Giants fan - said she isn't having any of it.

Late last week the second district supervisor revealed that she drafted a board resolution that she may present to her colleagues asking them to support her in seeking Lasorda's ouster from the parade.

Another Alioto tosses his hat in the ring

Joe Alioto, Jr., the grandson of the late San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto, is running for San Francisco Board of Supervisor in District 3, where incumbent Aaron Peskin is term-limited. He becomes the second member of the Alioto political dynasty to seek office this year: his cousin, San Francisco Police Commissioner Joe Alioto Veronese, dropped his bid for State Senate in the 3rd district Democratic primary, where incumbent Carole Migden faces a fierce challenge from Assemblyman Mark Leno.

Could Bill Jones be headed to Washington?

If John McCain does win the presidency, look for California’s Bill Jones to wind up in a prominent role in the new administration, maybe as a member of McCain’s cabinet. Jones is one of McCain’s most loyal supporters here, serving as his state campaign chairman in 2000 and 2008.
