Obama stakes out position on California gay marriage ballot initiative

Barack Obama: Getty Images PhotoReversing a previous position where he said the issue of gay marriage should be left up to the individual states, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama said over the weekend that he would oppose the California ballot proposition seeking a ban against same-sex nuptials.

In a letter read before the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club's Pride Breakfast in San Francisco on Sunday, Obama said he would oppose Prop. 8, the so-called Defense of Marriage Act that would amend the California Constitution to define marriage as being only between a man and a woman.

Schwarzenegger, Feinstein and Boxer join to ask Bush for help with firestorms

In the wake of the continuing firestorms ravaging the state, California's big political guns, U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer (both D-CA), joined with Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger late Friday to urge President Bush to declare a state of emergency as well as issue a Federal Disaster Assistance Declaration for the state.

And, it's no secret that in a town featuring more than 80 percent Democratic voter registration that President Bush isn't exactly the most popular commander in chief in these parts.

But in what could be a new high (or low?) in political theater, a group of city residents are circulating a petition to rename a sewer plant renamed in honor of the outgoing president.

State parties trade barbs ahead of Obama visit

The California Republican Party is taking aim at presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama hours before Obama is to attend a Hollywood fundraiser.

"Barack Obama will attend a fundraiser in Los Angeles tonight featuring some prominent supporters of Hillary Clinton's campaign for President. Obama's decision to mingle with tinsel town's elite, rather than meet with our commander in Iraq, leaves many Californians wondering about Obama's priorities,” said Ron Nehring, the California Republican Party chair.

The attack earned a harsh pushback from the California Democratic Party.

McCain to speak on environment in Santa Barbara

John McCain (R-Ariz.) has added a Tuesday morning appearance in Santa Barbara to his California swing, with his campaign Web site saying the presumptive Republican presidential nominee will have an environmental briefing.

The appearance will be at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, with doors opening at 7:30 a.m. The event is open to the public and McCain is scheduled to speak at about 9 a.m.

McCain to visit Fresno, Riverside next week

U.S. Senator John McCain of Arizona, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, will visit California early next week for a town hall meeting and two fund-raisers.

The trip will begin with an 8 a.m. town hall meeting Monday at the satellite student union at California State University, Fresno, followed by an 11:30 a.m. fund-raiser that day at the Radisson Hotel & Conference Center in downtown Fresno.
