Watkins runs the ground game, and tries to separate father from son

With Duncan D. Hunter Jr. vying for the Alpine U.S. House seat from which his father, Duncan Hunter Sr., is stepping down, rival Republican candidate Bob Watkins faces a formidable challenge: taking a seat that has long been held by a well-known, conservative family.

It is a reality that shapes the campaign strategy of Watkins, a businessman and president of the San Diego County Board of Education.

“Telling voters you’re not voting for Duncan Hunter Sr., you’re voting for Hunter’s son” is a major plank of the Watkins’ campaign, according to campaign manager Brian Watkins, who is not related to the candidate. “This race is going to be won on the ground.”

Hunter, an Army Captain who finished his third tour of duty in December, is running on his military background. He joined the race after his father announced in March 2007 that after 26 years in office he would not run for reelection. At the time, the elder Hunter was campaigning for the Republican presidential nomination.

Also campaigning for the vacant seat are Republican Brian Jones, a Santee City Councilman and minister, and Democrat Mike Lumpkin, a retired Navy officer.

Allan Hoffenblum, editor of the non-partisan California Target Book, says that with his business background and tenure as president of the Lincoln Club Watkins brings an appeal to the “country club Republican” set – an important demographic in a district that has an affluent population in its coastal region.

Watkins has also lined up a series of impressive endorsements. Sitting in his corner is Assemblywoman Shirley Horton, San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts, and Chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors Greg Cox.

Jones’ presence in the race could also help Watkins because Jones’ religious background may draw some conservative-minded voters away from Hunter.

One major factor to watch, says Hoffenblum, is the expected low turnout in the June 3 primary. If only the most conservative voters head out to the polls that day, Hunter might be in for a win, but the Watkins campaign says that won’t necessarily be a problem.

“(The turnout) doesn’t help any one candidate,” said Watkins, the campaign manager, who added that he was expecting to see “low-to-mid” turnout.

Watkins said that the more informed voters who were likely to vote in the primary would not confuse Hunter with his father.

For now, Watkins said the campaign is pounding home its grassroots emphasis, and is focused on interacting with voters.

“This race is really about getting out and talking to voters,” said Watkins.

family

Contemporary society generally views family as a haven from the world, supplying absolute fulfillment. The family is considered to encourage "intimacy, love and trust where individuals may escape the competition of dehumanizing forces in modern society from the rough and tumble industrialized world, and as a place where warmth, tenderness and understanding can be expected from a loving mother, and protection from the world can be expected from the father.

Lumpkin

Well, Lumpkin could have all the credentials possible, but he has one big problem. He is a Democrat and the district is over 2/3 Republican.

Furthermore, Hunter won the primary with 8,000 more votes than all the Dem votes combined.

My advice to Lumpkin is to keep his day job.

By the way, I think you should explain how Duncan Sr. has "helped to oversee the degradation of the U.S. military." This is a serious charge and, unless you are a liar or a crackpot you should back it up with some facts.

"Long held by a well known conservative family"? Really?

Hunter has been the Congressman from the Ca. 52nd district since 1980. He is the only Hunter to have held the seat. He won it from Democrat Lionel Van Deerlin. To imply that it has been held by the "family" is just factually wrong.

It is laudable that young Hunter is a Marine Captain. I served eight years as a Marine myself. Mark Lumpkin served 21 years as an officer in the Navy and retired as a Lt. Commander in the elite fighting force the SEALS.

Service to your country is a good thing. Not a requirement for office, but if you put weight in such things ....

Commander Lumpkin has his Masters Degree in National Security Affairs and has experience in Congressional affairs having been Liaison for legislative affairs as his final Navy assignment. As a freshman Congressman Mark will hit the ground running as a member of the majority party well versed in the issues important to East County San Diego.

He has one short fall though. His father hasn't been the Congressman from the 52nd district for the last 28 years.

He isn't part of a "well known conservative family".

I wonder at the value of having a father who has helped to oversee the degradation of the American Military though.

One thing young Hunter will bring ..... his fathers' K Street connections.

Ground Game for Watkins????

I havn't seen any Watkins signs anywhere, nor seen any major volunteer effort. In fact I called over asking if I could come into their office - and it isn't even in the district. Watkins is going to try to beat Duncan at the money game. But I really don't think he is going to pull it off.
